Windows update advisory · By Microsoft · Source checked 19 October 2026
Remote Desktop stopped working after an update? Before changing permissions or removing updates, check whether the failure matches a documented issue.
1. Match the error
The reported error code is 0xC000000D. Record the complete message and the time of the failed attempt. A connection failure without this code may have a different cause.

2. Check the remote host
Use this evidence checklist before making changes:
- Record the Windows version and build of the remote computer.
- Review its update history; do not rely only on the connecting laptop’s history.
- Confirm the connecting account’s role without adding it to Administrators as a test.
- Ask the device administrator to verify the effective Administrator protection policy.
- Keep screenshots free of usernames, public IP addresses, device names and organization details.
3. Review the current mitigation
At the source-check date, Microsoft is investigating a fix. Its temporary policy mitigation turns off Administrator protection on affected hosts. Because this reduces a security protection, a device administrator should assess and approve that trade-off.
Avoid applying an unrelated registry fix or broadly uninstalling security updates simply because an online report mentions RDP. First establish whether the documented conditions match.
4. Verify and keep a record
If an approved change is made, retry the same connection and record the result. Keep the original policy values, the change time and the restoration plan. Recheck Microsoft’s advisory before deployment: issue status and guidance can change.
Takeaway: Start with the exact symptom, identify the affected host and validate the conditions before selecting a workaround.
